Review: The Town House, Melrose, Scotland

While enjoying a weekend away in Scotland we decided that we didn’t want to eat in the caravan on both nights and so decided to venture out for food on our final night. There wasn’t that much nearby and the closest village was Melrose, which is an award winning town. I am not sure what it won an award for but it’s a nice little village.

There are quite a few decent places to eat in Melrose but the one that was recommended to us by the owners of the campsite was The Town House. From the outside it doesn’t really look like much and it’s actually a hotel as well.

Anyway, we wandered in and were asked if we had a reservation. It was the Sunday before the bank holiday but we luckily managed to get a table. It is only quite small inside.

As soon as we sat down we could see that the place had a nice atmosphere about it and looked pretty classy, if not a little quiet. I felt we couldn’t talk too loud otherwise everyone in the place would hear us.

The menu is really good and is probably what’s called “Gastro pub” foo, with it being mainly English food but with that something else about it. You know straight away that nothing in this place is going to be microwaved!

Being a fan of desserts I decided that I wouldn’t be able to eat a full 3 courses and opted for just a main and dessert. Emma did the same.

I honestly think I could have eaten everything on this food menu! The guy on the table next to us had ordered fish and chips and it looked pretty ace. However, I always get fish and chips so decided to get something that little bit nicer!

Here is a picture of the menu! As you can see it all sounds very good and I had no idea what some of the stuff was.

I just checked the menu on the website and it appears different to when we went, I am guessing the menu changes every few months which is good! Here is a link to their current menu

In the end, I decided to go for the fillet of beef with dauphinoise potatoes that came with a peppercorn sauce. I don’t get steak that often when eating out as sometimes the cuts of beef are not that good. However in this place I thought it could only be good! I asked for it to be cooked medium-rare, which is just how I like my steak. As you can see from the picture below it looks good but doesn’t look like there is that much. However there was plenty and it was just the right amount so that I had some room left for dessert.

Emma opted to go for Venison with (something) potatoes. She had never had Venison but is a fan of trying new foods and I told her how nice Venison is. She was not disappointed and a picture of her meal is below. I managed to taste a bit of the venison as well and it was pretty ace!

By the time we had eaten our main meals the place was full with not a table left. We had definitely arrived just in time.

The dessert menu was quite small but I honestly think I could have eaten anything on there. After some tough decision making I decided to go for the raspberry and meringue trifle. When it arrived it looked amazing and you could tell it had been freshly prepared.

Emma decided to go for the pears with something else, which neither of us had any idea what it was. In the end, it turned out to be some sort of ice cream we thoughtk. Either way, it was really nice. Around the outside of the plate were cherries that had been soaked in alcohol. I tasted one and it was really strong!

As you can see by the picture below her dessert looked pretty amazing!

If I was staying at this hotel I would want to eat here every night and end up leaving a stone heavier than when I arrived! That’s how good the food is!

My rating

Overall I would give it a 9/10 with the quietness of the place just letting it down. Everything else was great and I am just glad I don’t live near Melrose or I would eat there all the time! 🙂

Trip advisor rating

Its overall score on trip advisor was a solid 4.5 out of 5 with most people raving about it. Read more reviews below.

I have to say it was the most nicest meal I’ve ever had, perfect! The roasted pears were stunning, I loved it, could eat there every day!
